I’ve collected plenty of autumn poems for kids over the years, but for teaching phonics, I could never find exactly what I needed. That’s when I first started writing poems with a teaching target in mind.
When it came time to write a poem for the au vowel digraph (vowel team), it was a no brainer to write one about autumn. It’s my very favorite season and I love everything about it.
When writing phonics poems, I try to incorporate words with the targeted sound (in this case, au words) at the beginning, middle and/or end of words whenever appropriate, because kids need to be able to recognize letter patterns in different parts of a word.
I wrote this autumn poem to target the au vowel digraph, but it can work just as well as a mentor text for teaching the long e sound in words with ee and ea letter patterns:
Words in the poem with the ea vowel team letter pattern (long e sound):
- leaves
- year
Words in the poem with the ee letter pattern (long e sound):
- trees
- freeze
This autumn poem was written with grades 2-3 in mind, but it can certainly span up (or down with added learning support).
This autumn poem is available as a FREEBIE.
